The four-lane Glenwood Bridge in Pittsburgh will be reduced to two lanes – one in each direction – starting at 9 a.m. on Monday, March 17, 2025. The lane closures are expected to end in November 2025. They are required for the replacement of 11 expansion dams, barrier replacement, and pier repairs.

Drivers might experience traffic delays on and near the bridge during the lane closures, and they are urged to slow down and use caution at the work zone.

Daily lane closures on the Glenwood Bridge have ended. There will still be periodic lane closures on the bridge through the end of the year. During the upcoming periodic closures, at least one lane of traffic will always be available to drivers in each direction.

Next spring, there will be additional lane closures for about three months while crews replace the remaining deteriorated expansion dams. The exact start date for those lane closures has yet to be determined. When plans are finalized, that information will be provided to the public.

During upcoming lane closures, traffic will be controlled using channelizers.

The Glenwood Bridge will be closed to southbound/outbound traffic from 6 p.m. on Sunday, October 13 through 6 p.m. on Friday, October 18. The bridge will then be closed to northbound/inbound traffic from 6 p.m. on Sunday, October 20 through 6 p.m. on Friday, October 25. The closures are required for crews to safely do concrete repairs.

To accommodate the closures, Pittsburgh Regional Transit (PRT) announced that its 56-Lincoln Place bus route will be detoured. During the southbound closure, buses will be detoured using West Seventh Avenue (Route 837), West Eighth Avenue (Route 837), the Homestead Grays Bridge, Browns Hill Road, Imogene Road, Desdemona Avenue, and Johnston Avenue. During the northbound closure, buses will detour by going in the opposite direction on the same route as the southbound detour. Additionally, six stops on the route will be temporarily discontinued during each closure.

During the southbound closure, regular vehicle outbound traffic will be detoured using Irvine Street, Second Avenue, the Hotel Metal Bridge, Hot Metal Street, East Carson Street (Route 837), and Route 885. Northbound traffic will be allowed on the Glenwood Bridge using one lane.

During the northbound closure, regular vehicle inbound traffic will be detoured using East Carson Street (Route 837), Hot Metal Street, the Hot Metal Street Bridge. Southbound traffic will be allowed on the Glenwood Bridge using one lane.

Since the Glenwood Bridge preservation project began on March 4, 2024, the bridge has been reduced to two lanes – one in each direction. That traffic restriction will return following the upcoming full closures.
