The Allegheny County Parks Department is renovating the North Park playground. The project began in May and is estimated to be finished in early 2027.

Location

The playground is located on Tennis Court Road near the North Park Boathouse, one of the central hubs of North Park.

Project Details

The new playground will replace the nearly 30-year-old structures with new ones made from sustainably sourced black locust wood. The new playground will be ¼ acre larger and themed after the historic North Park Lake and Boathouse. It will have accessible paths throughout and include a variety of options for inclusive play.

The new playground will consist of a smaller area designed for ages 2-5 and a larger area for ages 5-12. The smaller area will consist of a small boat for imaginative play, a log climbing structure, and a music theatre cottage. The larger area will contain a large ship play structure, a double zip-line, a rope climbing ring. an inclusive carousel, and a net spinner. There will be a swing set in the playground with 12 total swings.

A new system of underdrains and a rain garden, planted with over 3,300 native perennials, will be installed to address poor stormwater drainage in the area. A total of 35 native trees will also be planted in and around the playground. Demolition of the old park concluded in July 2026, and construction is estimated to be finished in early 2027.

History

The area was once part of the Wagener family farm and has been used for a playground as early as the 1970’s. The last playground renovation was installed in 1999. Almost 30 years later, this project will bring needed improvements to the playground’s safety, inclusivity, and stormwater drainage.
