Project Overview

Allegheny County, with funding from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), is planning to replace Big Sewickley Creek Bridge No. 7, which carries Spang Road near Warrendale Bayne Road in Marshall Township.

The project will involve removal of the existing bridge; construction of a new, wider bridge; approach roadway work, drainage improvements; stream grading, guide rail upgrades; and new signs and pavement markings.

Big Sewickley Creek Bridge No. 7, which was built in 1910, is used by an average of 535 vehicles daily. It has a bridge condition rating of 6 (fair condition) on a 0-9 scale based on National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) established by the Federal Highway Administration. For more information about bridge condition ratings, visit http://alleghenycounty.us/bridges.

Project Purpose

The Big Sewickley Creek Bridge No. 7 replacement project is intended to improve safety and traffic flow on Spang Road over Big Sewickley Creek in Marshall Township. That will be done by widening the bridge from its current width of 19 feet, 1 inch to a width of 30 feet. The new bridge will accommodate two 10-foot travel lanes, a 4-foot left shoulder, and a 6-foot right shoulder.

Proposed Detour

Traffic is expected to be detoured using Warrendale Bayne Road, Markman Park Road, and Pleasant Hills Road:
